Feeling kind of proud of Harding for his slight increse in backbone this chapter, except it's undermined by his motivation--it's as much about not being bothered with public scandal as about doing right.  Is that bothering you?

I think that may have been from 5, actually.  Here's 6:

The party went off as such parties do. There were fat old ladies, in
fine silk dresses, and slim young ladies, in gauzy muslin frocks; old
gentlemen stood up with their backs to the empty fire-place, looking
by no means so comfortable as they would have done in their own
arm-chairs at home; and young gentlemen, rather stiff about the neck,
clustered near the door, not as yet sufficiently in courage to attack
the muslin frocks, who awaited the battle, drawn up in a semicircular
array. The warden endeavoured to induce a charge, but failed
signally, not having the tact of a general; his daughter did what she
could to comfort the forces under her command, who took in refreshing
rations of cake and tea, and patiently looked for the coming
engagement: but she herself, Eleanor, had no spirit for the work; the
only enemy whose lance she cared to encounter was not there, and she
and others were somewhat dull.

I always love a good extended metaphor, but are these people twelve?

Chapter 5 has explained to me perfectly the heretofore-mysterious phrase "woman's intuition:"
Nothing had been explained to her about Bold and the
hospital; but, with a woman's instinct she knew that things were going
wrong.
That is to say, not being stupid, in a woman, is preternatural insightfulness.  Who knew?  There's so much about being a man I have yet to learn!

It's interesting to me how unambiguously the bedesmen who favor Bold are painted as bad and wrong.  Do you think there's any hint of sarcasm here, or is this really what he's driving at? On the one hand, Harding and Bold are clearly "good guys," yet Handy is a slime, Skulpit a wimp, and Bunce honorable and loyal.

I don't quite know what I can say about this chapter yet.  Themes: one righteous (clergy)man, being less interested in being proven right than in being right...to be honest, I'm having a little trouble with this stage of things, and will be glad when it's progressed further.  I do hope someone will come support Bold and Harding soon.

The scene in the bed somewhat speaks to me, after having lived in the world of the clergy for some time.  The position of the spouse of a clergymember--as well as whether the clergymember should be viewed as human--is a current and constant subject of discussion, perhaps much more so now, in a world with female clergy (and in other arrangements clergy with spouses that have their own careers), than it was in Trollope's time.

Also, all of the hideously boring first chapter could have been encapsulated in four more sentences added to Mrs. Grantly's lines in chapter two.  I guess they hadn't invented "show, don't tell" yet then.

Wednesday, December 1st, 2010 06:47 pm
So we went away for five days, and we asked the rabbi to stop in and pet Peri and Margo and feed Biscuit. We left her a bunch of instructions, and all was well. When we were on our way home, we called her and she said everything was fine, "only the automatic feeder didn't seem to be working, but it was no problem--I fed them." We knew then, and we had another clue when we got home and Peri met us at the door looking like a blimp, but sure enough at 7:00 the feeder went off right on time, Peri ate everything there was, and then sat there peering up the chute looking for the rest. Sure enough, Noah assumed they were poor starving things because when she came in they were looking sadly up the chute and meowing.
Noah also said that Peri came and snuggled with her, but Margo mainly hid and peered out at her from under things, unless she was pouring food. When we came in, Peri threw herself at us joyfully and has been snuggling frantically any time we're on the sofa or at the table (with particular attention to throwing herself across the keyboards). Margo however avoided us and hid in a corner and wouldn't let anyone pet her until 2 in the morning, when she suddenly forgave us, hopped up on the bed, had a parade back and forth across all the organs she could reach, and then lay down and began purring like a buzzsaw and drooling a little river. Which she's been doing any time we're both in the bed ever since. So for five days away, we have an incredible amount of snuggling in our lives. ALL OVER our lives.
And that's the story of the cats and their very intense snuggling and how they tricked Noah into double their meals for five days. The end!
